The Translation Pattern Of The Indigenous Concepts In China's National Defense White Paper From The Perspective Of Communication Theory

In the context of globalization,the Information Office of the State Council of China regularly publishes China's National Defense White Papers(CNDWP in short)through domestic and foreign media to enhance international mutual trust and cooperation and create shared destiny.The CNDWP comes into thematic and comprehensive types and has been translated into multiple languages.This research selects CNDWP from 2010 to 2019,namely National Defense White Papers in 2010,China Armed Forces Diversification in 2013,China Military Strategy in 2015,and China's National Defense in the New Era in 2019,and establishes a C-E parallel database of indigenous concept of CNDWP.The translation of the CNDWP is actually the process of information communication among which indigenous concept translation is the difficulty.Therefore,this research combines the communication model with translation and focuses on the angles of communicator,receiver,effect and translation strategies to explore the English translation of indigenous concepts in CNDWP.This research aims to explore the following three questions:(1)how many types of indigenous concepts in CNDWP?(2)what are the characteristics of the indigenous concept translation of CNDWP from the perspective of communication?(3)what kind of English translation pattern does the indigenous concepts present in CNDWP from the communication perspective and why?Data and case analysis,combined with quantitative and qualitative research methods are employed to conduct the research.Findings are as follows:(1)there are 592 indigenous concepts in the CNDWP and they can be divided into about five categories: military(289),politics(153),linguistic(85),geography(45)and economy(20).(2)In view of information communication,the indigenous concept translation in CNDWP features military,politics,conciseness,pertinence and authenticity etc.(3)The research found the translation pattern of the indigenous concepts in terms of information processing can be presented as follows: trans-coding > synthesization > paraphrasing > substitution > transliteration > deletion(“>” referring to “more than”);different indigenous concepts follow different translation pattern;on account of the special features of CNDWP,the translator mainly employs trans-coding or synthesization(mainly in combination with trans-coding),while the deletion is less adopted to make the source language transferred faithfully and expressively,and the translator also pertinently adopts paraphrasing,substitution and transliteration to deal with redundancy and noise because of the various indigenous concepts in CNDWP to make the receiver understand the major information,which is benefit to achieve optimal communication effect,including the dissemination of the source language and good image of China.In light of this,the communicators are supposed to be either skilled Chinese or foreign translators who are familiar with Chinese and foreign cultural backgrounds with the purpose of communicating an objective and positive image of China,and based on target readers,referring to the former translation pattern to process indigenous concepts,they may dispose redundancy and noise logically and summarize the feedback timely.The research further found that the indigenous concepts in the CNDWP increases annually in general,and the English translation has been continuously improved,which is of great significance for China image shaping,maintaining the language security of our country,and enhancing the efficiency of China's military discourse power.
