A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of Complex Sentences In Marine Occurrence Reports

A complex sentence is a sentence that consists of only one main clause but has one or more subordinate clauses functioning as an element of the sentence.The marine occurrence report is the first-hand comprehensive information that reflects and records the accident situation.It is significant for providing reference and enlightenment to the world marine transportation to find out the cause of the accident,sum up the lessons related to the marine accident,and give opinions and suggestions accordingly.The translator conducted the translation practice based on the SS Richard Montgomery Survey Report 2017 released by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.During the translation process,it was found that complex sentences appear frequently in the marine occurrence report,concerning complicated relations with many meaningful modifiers.It is required that the translator should understand the intrinsic meaning of such complex sentences 'in the process of translation practice.In view of these characteristics,the author translated the marine occurrence report based on the principle of the skopos theory.Considering the differences between the Chinese and English marine occurrence reports and based on the translation of various related materials,the translator selected different translation methods for different structures in the process of translation practice,e.g.linear translation,adjustments,recombination,division,integrated approach,etc..Finally,the translation efficiency is improved through the use of multiple translation methods.Therefore,the target language readers can understand the meaning of complex sentences accurately and thoroughly.
