A Report On The Translation Of The Witcher:Season Of Storms With CAT

With the popularity of The Ring King and Harry Potter,fantasy literature works have been gradually known by the public and have been more and more popular among the readers.Presently,there are some prominent problems in the translation of fantasy literature:First,the translation is diverse even to the same object in the same book,which is puzzling the readers.Second,the traditional way of translation is relatively inefficient,especially in dealing with the proper nouns,for the translator has to reaffirm them again and again,taking a lot of time and energy.Third,the quality of translation is uneven.Because of the misunderstanding of source text,even professional translators may make mistakes in the translation of certain concepts.Therefore,Computer-Aided Translation(CAT)will be used in this report to assist the translation of Season of Storms.The advantages and disadvantages of applying CAT in the translation of fantasy literature works will be discussed.Specific suggestions for translation will be made according to the features of fantasy literature works.The report found that the advantages of translating fantasy works with CAT are as follows.First,it allows users to unify the proper nouns in the source text.Second,the translator is rid of reaffirming the specific words with the help of translation memory,which makes the process more efficient.It is also found that CAT can only provide references according to the matching degree of sentences.Because of the low repetition rate of fantasy literature,translation memory and other functions cannot be well applied.Aiming at some problems in applying CAT to translation such as lack of coherence and culture-specific items,solutions will be provided from the perspective of technical operation and translator,which will be helpful for future translation studies.
