Pierced carving is an artistic with a strong aesthetic perception.Artists and designers are deeply attracted by its creativity and transparent visual effect.It is widely used in furniture decoration,architectural design and jewelry processing.With the recognition of stereoscopic and structure aesthetic gradually distinct,people are craving for more diversified crafts.However,exquisite crafts usually need to be carefully designed by imaginative artists and handmade by skilled and experienced craftsmen,which is difficult to design and manufacture.With the emergence of 3D printing technology,the manufacture of complex geometric models has been significantly improved.It offers opportunities for the development of crafts from hand-made to digital manufacturing and motivates researchers to concentrate on the prototyping and generation.At present,existing research mainly focuses on generating 3D models with repetitive texture based on basic patterns.It is open issues that how to prototype carved model with binary image by users.However,geometric modeling of the image pierced carving is non-trivial due to three challenging problems:how to adapt the given image to variant,limited 3D printing resolutions with high fidelity;how to adapt details if there might be no enough space for two adjacent tones details;how to ensure the printability and physical soundness of the carved model.In view of the above,we propose a binary image carving system.Given an arbitrary binary image and a 3D surface model,we formulate the image carving into image details adaption and structure enhancement problems,iteratively optimize the image and carved shape,and obtain a 3D printable and structural sound model.The experimental data show that our system produces user-controllable fabricable and visually satisfactory results,which can be applied to design prototype for additive manufacturing,and supports professional modelers and enthusiasts.
