| With the trend of globalization in a new era, interpreting activities are in the direction of diversity and specialty. Many scholars believe that the requirements for interpreters in specific fields have been increasing, and interpreters in the new era should not only be familiar with professional interpreting skills, but also have a mastery of relevant background knowledge.A certain amount of existing studies have proved the correlation between the background knowledge and interpreting quality. However, there is little attention has been paid to the acquisition and degree of interpreters’ background knowledge.Few studies have explored the interpreting quality in specific domains from the perspective of interpreters’ academic background. This dissertation intends to conduct an empirical study to explore the effect of academic background on consecutive interpreting quality and the causes of it.There are individual differences in interpreters’ performance. This dissertation intends to explore the effect of academic background on the Chinese-English consecutive interpreting quality of the texts in relevant fields and its reasons by comparing interpreters’ interpreting performance and analyzing the correlations between them. This dissertation uses the ChineseEnglish consecutive interpreting practice as the primary research instrument, and adopts follow-up interview and note-taking analysis as supplementary methods to collect data.MTI students of Shandong Jianzhu University(SDJ)are chosen as the participants. They were divided into two groups with the same number according to whether they have academic background associated with architecture discipline in their undergraduate study.SPSS and content analysis were used to analyze the data. Finally, reasons for the correlations and implications of interpreting teaching and training are summarized based on the findings. With the mixed methods of quantitative and qualitative research, valuable results are confirmed in this dissertation.Firstly, interpreters with different academic backgrounds have important differences in interpreting performance. What’s more, there exists a positive significant correlation between interpreters’ academic background and C-E CI quality.Furthermore, there exists a high correlation between academic background and accuracy;there is a significant correlation between academic background and completeness, fluency, and the interpreting quality;and there is no obvious correlation between academic background and promptness. Finally, academic background exerts an effect on production quality by influencing interpreters’ comprehension, working memory,note-taking efficiency and psychology. The training of MTI students can be sufficiently combined with other subjects. In daily interpreting learning and training, interpreters can choose other disciplines to study systematically and pay attention to unique note-taking rules. |
