This is a practice report based on English-Chinese translation of Free Guide to New Zealand,which is an English publication for the summer of 2018-2019 issued by arrival travel magazine,detailing the basic situation,transportation,accommodation,catering,shopping and tourist attractions of New Zealand.The author is entrusted by Hainan Youyou Eco-Tourism Investment Company to translate the introduction of tourist attractions in the guide.In the report,the author discusses the problems encountered in the translation of the tourist guide and the ways to solve these problems by applying the theory of reception aesthetics.Reception aesthetics emphasizes the central position of readers,and the translation effect of tourist guide depends on the reception of the target readers.Under the guide of reception aesthetics,the author adopts translation skills such as amplification,omission,transformation,splitting and reorganization,so as to make the expression of the translation more in line with the target readers’ language habits,cultural psychology and aesthetic taste.Through the analysis of this translation practice,the author finds that reception theory,as the guiding theory of tourism translation,can improve the readability and acceptability of the translated tourist guide,by putting the target readers at the center of the translation practice,considering their cultural background,language habits and emotions.The translator should give full play to his subjectivity and creativity,identifying ambiguities in the source text and supplementing the semantic vacancies.For the consideration of the readers,when necessary,the translator should even betray the form and the literal meaning of the source text,so as to convey the true purpose of the source text.
