A Report On The Chinese-english Translation Of Refrigerated Truck Compartment Design From The Perspective Of Translation Shifts Theory

As a practice report on the Chinese-English translation,this report describes the translation process of Refrigerated Truck Compartment Design,a science and technology text Being the object of the case analysis,the source language text mainly introduces such contents as cold chain logistics,components of refrigeration system,model and structure of refrigerated trucks,design of the refrigeration system in refrigerated trucks and cascade air supply in refrigerated trucks.The source text is typically professionalized,covering a wide range of areas,such as refrigeration,mechanics,automobiles and materials,with a considerable number of professional terms and proposes a relatively high requirement for the accuracy of terms,clarity of logic and conciseness of expression.This report,based on the Translation Shifts Theory proposed by Catford,analyzes some typical cases,which are classified according to the sub-types of category shifts,namely structure-shifts,class-shifts,unit-shifts and intra-system-shifts.Structure-shifts include the shifts between active voice and passive voice,affirmation and negation and pre-modifier and post-modifier.Class-shifts mainly refer to the shifts of parts of speech.Unit-shifts include the shifts between phrases and words and those between clauses and phrases.Intra-system-shifts include shifts in the numeral system and other shifts.The research finds that the Translation Shifts Theory can guide the translation practice perfectly.However,since the theory only deals with the shifts happened on the sentence level or below,attention has been paid to the shifts on the paragraph and discourse level,making the coherence and consistency of the target text realized.It is found that when professional texts are translated,preparation before translation is influential to the quality and efficiency of translation.
