An English-Chinese Translation Practice Report On KO Motorway Subcontract

As China’s “the Belt and Road” initiative continues to deepen,many competitive enterprises in China have invested in overseas investment or large scale engineering projects,which include providing assistance or aid in construction for projects in developing or backward countries.KO motorway subcontract is one of the projects arises under the above background.The English-Chinese translation practice report is based on KO motorway subcontract as a case,combining theory with practice.As a kind of engineering contract,KO motorway subcontract stipulates the rights and obligations of both parties to the subcontract,has the language characteristics of contract English and contains a large number of engineering terms.It is restrictive and mandatory for both parties.Therefore,this thesis is devoted to discuss how to translate the motorway subcontract correctly under the guidance of the theory,so as to prevent the loss of interests of both parties and even the occurrence of disputes caused by mistranslation of international engineering contracts,as well as ensure the efficient communication and mutual benefit of all parties involved and the progress of the project.Eventually,it aims at promoting the engineering cooperation between Chinese and local enterprises of the motorway subcontract,and expanding the cooperation between Chinese enterprises and overseas enterprises.This English-Chinese translation practice report takes the KO motorway subcontract as the translation material,uses Skopostheorie summarized by functionalist Christiane Nord as the theoretical guidance,and elaborates many problems encountered in detail in the practice process and the specific translation methods,strategies and skills from three aspects of words,sentences and chapters combined with examples.Through the above methods,the author finds that the translation of KO motorway subcontract under the guidance of Skopostheorie can maintain the communicative function of the source text,and achieve the functional equivalence of the translation,so that the translation effect of the translation is equivalent to the source text.Therefore,Skopostheorie has positive significance and applicability in guiding the translation of similar engineering contracts with unique linguistic features,and it also provides translation ideas for the same type of target texts in the future.Nord’s research combined with practice according to her monographs on Skopostheorie is mainly focused on literary translation,and Skopostheorie is also applicable to practical translation texts.The research on engineering contract translation is a latecomer of all the contract translation in China,so this translation practice report has strong theoretical significance.At the same time,the rights and obligations stipulated in the engineering contracts and the large amount of money involved determine that this report also has strong practical significance.
