| The passive voice is a grammatical means used with high frequency in EST.Some scholars have reported that at least one third of the verbs was used in passive voice in the physical,chemical,and engineering literature.The passive sentence can highlight objects that need to be demonstrated more than the active sentence.It puts the scientific and technological problems that need to be demonstrated and explained in the subject position of the sentence to make themclearly and prominently.At the same time,the passive voice is less subjective than the active voice,which is exactly in line with the stylistic requirements of the technical text.According to the practice of translating two agricultural science soil papers into Chinese,which is translation project of master’sthesis,Relationships Between the Denitrification Capacities translation of Soils and Total,Water-Soluble and Readily Decomposable Soil Organic Matter and Evolutionary Histories of Soil Fungi are Reflected in Their Large-Scale Biogeography,under the guidance of English-Chinese Contrastive Linguistics and Nida’sFunctional Equivalence theory,the paper verifiesthe pragmatic characteristics of the passive voice in EST,such as highlighting the theme,making discourse coherence and increasing the objectivity and scientificity,etc.The paper discussesthe differences and driving factorsin the cultural and thinking levels of passive sentences between EST and scientific Chinese,andfinds out the guiding role of Functional Equivalence translation theory in the translation of EST,which can help translators to pursue an infinite approach to the function of the original text.Under the guidance of functional equivalence theory,the paper summarizes the translation skills of the passive voice of EST.The passive sentences in EST can be translated into multiple types of Chinese sentences,such as active sentences,passive sentences,declarative sentences,and non-subject sentences and so on.The summary report of the translation project not only helps improve the author’s own translation ability,but also can serve as a reference case for the special translation of the the agricultural science and technology English in the translation of passive voice in EST into Chinese,which is helpful to the translation study and practice of the passive voice of EST. |
