A Report On The Translation Of GLOBISH:How The English Language Became The World's Language(Excerpts)from The Perspective Of Chesterman's Translation Norm Theory

In recent years,with the deepening of global exchanges,cultural exchanges have also shown unprecedented prosperity.As a major means of cultural exchange,the translation industry has also developed vigorously.More and more foreign works have been sent to China,and Chinese works rich in the historical and cultural traditions of the Chinese nation have also been introduced to the west,promoting the inheritance and exchange of civilization.However,it is not difficult to find that although various translation works emerge one after another,the quality of these works has not been well controlled.This has led scholars to ponder: just like social norms,translation should also have certain norms and a series of constraints on translators and translation behaviors.As a matter of fact,some scholars have long studied translation norms and put forward relevant theories.As time goes on,translation norms emerge one after another and become more and more perfect,some of which are generally accepted by the international community.For the development of China's translation industry,we must keep up with the trend,constantly explore these norms and better use these norms,so as to create better translation works.As a renowned scholar in the studies of translation norms,Gideon Toury has distinguished three kinds of translation norms: preliminary norms,the initial norms and operational norms.Based on Toury,Andrew Chesterman put forward another set of translation norms,which includes expectancy norms and professional norms(also known as product norms and process norms).GLOBISH: How the English Language Became the World's Language was published in 2010 by Doubleday Canada,a division of Random House of Canada Limited.The author,Robert McCrum,is a well-known author and journalist,an announcer of BBC radio four,a deputy editor of the Observer,as well as a senior writer in the British book world.The book consists of five chapters,discussing Globish,a popular cultural phenomenon,from which we can see clearly how the British and American empires have become the world's dominant powers and how their language has evolved into a world's lingua franca.Based on the norm theory proposed by Chesterman,this report attempts to explore the influence of translation norms on translation versions,translators and relative translation behaviors,as well as the reflection of such influence in translation versions.On the precondition of an accurate understanding of GLOBISH: How the English Language Became the World's Language,I translated it into English,did a comprehensive analysis and primarily investigated the influence of translation norms on translation behaviors and the formation of the translation version,so as to reveal the important role the norms played in translation process.In this report,I quoted examples to illustrate how the translator,under the guidance and restriction of Chesterman's translation norms,made the translation more concise and easier to read.So the target language readers can have the same reading experience as the source language readers.In order to achieve the expected translation effect,I flexibly adopted a variety of translation strategies in the process of translation,trying to overcome the obstacles caused by historical,cultural and linguistic differences.In this report,translation strategies are discussed to reveal the translation norms that are between the lines.
