A Report On The E-C Translation Of Parentheses

With the continuous development of language communication,the research on parentheses has become more and more extensive.As a major iconic component in literary works,parentheses often have an impact on the coherence and meaning of sentences,and may be a challenge for translators;therefore,it is necessary to study the translation of parentheses.In recent years,the translation of English parentheses has attracted more attention,but related literature is still limited,and related translation strategies are not mature enough.This translation report focuses on the translation strategies of parentheses in the novel Anything is Possible(chapter 5 & 6).The novel,written by American writer Elizabeth Strout,contains a number of parentheses,not only to create variety in sentence patterns,but also to achieve special literary effects;hence it is worthwhile to study.A total number of 52 sentences containing parentheses appear in Chapter 5 and Chapter 6 of Anything is Possible.Discussions on translation strategies of parentheses include words,phrases and sentence patterns.In addition,five translation strategies including literal translation,omission and amplification,embedding,sentence pattern transformation and recasting are proposed to solve related problems.
