For junior high school students,English reading is an important skill in English learning. In line with the New Curriculum Standard for Junior High School, students are expected to improve their English reading ability. However, many students have some problems in English reading. Therefore,it becomes an urgent and challenging task for English teachers to help students improve their English reading ability and stimulate their interest in English reading. The question-based teaching model is a new term which appeared in recent years. The teaching model of English reading based on the question is a new teaching model. This teaching model provides a new perspective for improving the teaching situation. The purpose of this study is to test the effectiveness of this teaching model in junior high school English reading teaching. This thesis is mainly concerned with a theoretical review on the question-based teaching model and its practical application in junior high school English reading teaching. An experiment based on this model was conducted in the study. The research questions of the experiment are listed as follows:1.Does the question-based teaching model improve the students’ reading achievements?2.Does the question-based teaching model exert on the students’ English reading skills?3.Does the students have positive attitude towards the question-based teaching model?During the experiment,88 students of two classes of Grade Eight(44 in the EC and 44 in the CC)were randomly selected from the researcher’s school as the subjects and a 16-week research was conducted. The pre-test result shows that the English reading ability of the two classes is basically the same.Class 167 was randomly assigned as the control class and Class 168 was assigned as the experimental class. Before the experiment, the questionnaire was used to investigate the students’ English reading skills in the CC and the EC.In the experimental class, the question-based teaching model was used to teach English reading, while traditional teaching model was used to teach English reading in the control class. After the four-month reading teaching, students in the two classes took part in a post-test in which the differences in the reading ability of the two classes became obvious. The achievement of the experimental class is higher than that of the control class. Then the same questionnaire was used again to investigate the changes of students’ English reading skills in the two classes after the experiment. From the data collected with the questionnaire, the researcher found that the question-based teaching model can improve the students’ English reading skills in the experimental class. After the experiment,a face-to-face interview was conducted in the experimental class in order to reveal the students’ attitudes towards the question-based teaching model. It can be obtained from the results of interview that the majority of the students hold positive attitudes towards the question-based teaching model. Thus,it can be concluded that this teaching model can motivate students’ learning interest in English reading. The results of the research show that the question-based teaching model can improve students’ English reading achievements. In addition, the question-based teaching model can help students to improve their English reading skills, and students in the experimental class have a positive attitude towards this teaching model.
