Teachers' professional development plays an increasingly important role in education and social development,which is not only influenced by teachers' own factors,but also by school environment and social environment.In the light of how to optimize the professional development environment of the teachers of English,this thesis studied it from the perspective of educational ecology.This study adopted a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods,taking the teachers of English in Kunming secondary schools as the research subject.One hundred and fifty questionnaire of secondary school English teachers' professional development environment were distributed,and one hundred and forty-one valid questionnaire were analyzed quantitatively by the Statistical Package for Social Science(SPSS)18.0.Interviews were carried out with six English teachers from the participants.The main purpose of this study was to obtain an in-depth understanding of the current situation of ecological environment of secondary school English teachers' professional development,aiming at providing methods for optimizing the ecological environment of their professional development and promoting their professional development.Therefore,this thesis regarded teachers and their professional development environment as an ecological system,analyzed and discussed the professional development environment from the perspective of educational ecology and related theories.It also analyzed the important environmental factors affecting teachers' professional development from three dimensions: teachers' individual environment(micro system),school environment(mezzo system)and social environment(macro system).The major findings were shown as follows:(1)The overall situation of ecological environment of English teachers' professional development is not very optimistic.Urban secondary school English teachers' professional environment is better than rural secondary school English teachers.(2)The major factors affecting English teachers' professional development are reflected in three aspects: interaction ability on teaching and learning environment(personal environment),workload ofEnglish teachers(school environment)and social and cultural atmosphere of respecting teachers and valuing education(social environment).
