With the development of multimedia technology,people have many ways other than single text to receive information.Multimodal communication methods,such as images,sounds,words and other interactive modes are increasingly occupying the field of information transmission.Documentary is a comprehensive form of communication that contains images,words,musics and so on.Therefore,it can appeal to the audiences and resonate with the audiences.Based on the Visual Grammar of G.Kress,and T.van Leeuwen,and Zhang Delu's complementary relationship theory,this study mainly adopts the qualitative analysis method to make an in-depth multimodal analysis of Amazing China.The study aims to analyze how the meaning of the documentary is constructed from a multimodal perspective.Firstly,Visual Grammar is used to analyze how the visual modes achieves the construction of discourse meaning,and Systemic Functional Grammar is used to analyze how the verbal modes achieves the construction of discourse meaning.Secondly,the study attempts to analyze how these modes cooperated in the construction of meaning.Finally,Zhang Delu's complementary relationship theory is used to analyze the relationship between the modes.This study explores how multimodal discourse realizes the construction of discourse meaning,so as to attract audiences and provoke people's thinking.Through research and analysis,the following conclusions are drawn:First,ideational function and interpersonal function are mainly constructed by the verbal mode in Amazing China.Second,representational meaning,interactive meaning,and compositional meaning are constructed by the visual mode in Amazing China.Third,the different modes of image,color,text,and sound in Amazing China complement each other to form a complementary relationship,which promotes a morecomplete expression of meaning.This study verifies the validity of multimodal theory and is helpful to the study of dynamic multimodal discourse.At the same time,this study has reference significance for Chinese TV documentaries.
