| With the speedy progress of photography and science and technology, people have more diversified ways to obtain information.Single language text cannot meet the needs of meaning representation,so “multimodal discourse” came into being.Multimodal discourse is a phenomenon that uses hearing, sight, touch, taste and smell to communicate through images, texts, sounds, expressions, gestures and other ways. The environment is the basis of human survival and effective environmental protection requires the participation of the whole society. As a typical multimodal discourse, ecological documentaries can appear in people’s lives through various media, imperceptibly convey the concept of environmental protection to the audience and improve people’s awareness of environmental protection.Taking the “Changbai Mountain Series” and “Guizhou Karst Series” in the documentary Amazing China as the data, with the help of Elan software,a total of 50 images were selected and the corresponding subtitles were transcribed. From the perspective of multimodal discourse analysis, based on systemic functional grammar and visual grammar, combined with the inter-semiotic relation theory, this thesis analyzes the documentary from the following three aspects: how the interactive meaning is realized through the visual mode, how the interactive meaning is realized through the verbal mode, how different modes work together to realize the interactive meaning. The results show that in the visual mode, documentaries mostly interact with the audience through the cooperation of contact, social distance, perspective and modality. The visual mode often uses indirect contact, medium shots and eye-level perspective to provide objective information and use high modality to enhance the authenticity of documentaries. In the verbal mode, documentaries mostly use the cooperation of mood, modality and person system to realize the interaction with the audience. The verbal mode mainly adopts the declarative mood, modalization concerned with probability and frequency and the third person system to maintain the documentary’s objectivity. In terms of the inter-semiotic relations, the visual mode and verbal mode in the documentary are indispensable, forming a complementary and non-reinforcement relationship, while sounds and lights as the auxiliary form, forming a complementary and reinforcement relationship with them. The synergy of different modes aims to realize the interaction with the audience through the real scene images, warn the audience and improve the audience’s awareness of environmental protection.By analyzing the documentary Amazing China, this thesis aims to provide some reference value for the multimodal discourse analysis of the ecological documentary.More importantly,it is hoped that through this research, the information and ideas hidden behind the documentary Amazing China can be better transmitted to the audience so as to improve people’s awareness of environmental protection as well as make the concept of“harmonious coexistence between man and nature” deeply rooted in the hearts of the people. |
