In international business activities,contracts are one of the most important documents specify the obligations and rights of the parties involved and ensure the realization of business deals.Along with the economic globalization,the market is witnessing a large upsurge in the demand of high-quality contract translation whose emergency is an inevitable the result of frequent cooperation among enterprises around the world.However,accurate diction,complex sentences and rigorous structures in contracts pose big challenges for translators.Therefore,based on the translation practice of the trademark license agreement,this report mainly addresses the translation problems under the relevance theory so as to achieve the optimal relevance between the source text and the target text.According to the core argument of the relevance theory,translators shall provide optimal contextual effects in target texts to make target texts easy to understand.Focusing on enhancing contextual effects of target texts and reducing processing effort for receptors,this report gives solutions for addressing lexical asymmetry,syntactic logic confusion and discoursal incoherence so as to achieve the optimal relevance between the source and target text.At lexical level,explicature of original intentions and presumption through contextual analyses are applied to address the absence of equivalents and polysemy translation.At syntactic level,restructuring of sense-groups and explication of sentences logic are used to overcome the obstacles in sentence translation.At discoursal level,creation of reference chains and proper omission of additive conjunctions are applied to obtain logical and coherent texts.This report intends to provide effective suggestions for translators to solve the typical problems in contract translation and improve the quality of target texts.
