The Influence Of Competence On Physical Attractiveness In Different Situations

Physical attractiveness is the perception of the external appearance that can cause the people to have a pleasant or beautiful feeling.The discussion about its antecedent variables mainly focuses on the physical attributes of the appearance owner and the physiological factors,psychological factors and social factors of the external observer.Competence is one of the dimensions of people’s cognitive evaluation of other people’s psychological quality.Its main connotation is clever,powerful,effective and skillful,etc.It has sufficient representativeness,situationality and gender difference.At present,the research on the influence of psychological quality on physical attractiveness is nearly blank.A few studies have neglected the situation,neglected the gender difference,ignored the ecological validity,and ignored the theoretical foundation.Based on this,this research is based on the perspective of evolutionary psychology,and explores the influence of the competence of different situations on the physical attractiveness.The three studies all take college students as the main subjects,using contextual manipulation and single-factor inter-test design.Experiment 1 explores the influence of the competence of the unrelated situation on the physical attractiveness.It is found that:(1)When the competence of a strange male is perceived,the subject’s evaluation of his attractiveness will be significantly improved;(2)When the competence of a strange female is perceived,the subject’s evaluation of her attractiveness will be significantly improved;(3)the female subject’s assessment of the target male has the largest increase,and the increase of the same-sex assessment is no significant difference,and the increase in female subjects was significantly higher than that in male subjects.Experiment 2 explores the influence of the competence of on the physical attractiveness of the competitive situation.It is found that:(4)When the competence of a strange male is perceived,the subject’s evaluation of his attractiveness will be significantly reduced;(5)When the competence of a strange female is perceived,the subject’s evaluation of her attractiveness will be significantly reduced;(6)the male subject’s assessment of the male target is the largest reduce,and the decrease in same-sex subjects was significantly higher than that in opposite-sex subjects,and the decrease in female subjects was significantly lower than that in male subjects.Experiment 3 explores the influence of the ability characteristics on the external appeal of the altruistic situation.It is found that:(7)When the ability of a strange male is perceived,the evaluation of the attractiveness of the subject will be significantly improved;(8)When the competence of a strange female is perceived,the subject’s evaluation of her attractiveness will be significantly improved;(9)the male subject’s assessment of the female target has the largest increase,and the decrease in same-sex subjects was significantly lower than that in opposite-sex subjects,and the increase in the female subject’s assessment was significantly lower than the increase in the male assessment.In summary,the influence of the competence on physical attractiveness has a situational dependence.In order to maintain self-survival,human aesthetic perception has certain adaptability.Future research should pay more attention to the mediator variables and regulatory variables,as well as the acquisition of relevant physiological evidence,and use quasi-experimental design to explore the aesthetic truth in the subdivision situation.
