Many contemporary directors are devoted to Buddhist and Zen culture, and their works are mostly permeated with Buddhist and Zen thoughts. This paper aims to sort out the characteristics, causes and significance of contemporary directors' Buddhist and Zen thoughts through the directors' dramatic practice.Lin Zhaohua is fascinated with Zen's intuitive thinking, the subject-object integration,self-achievement,and the second theme he created.Lin Zhaohua requires performers to feel with the sensitivity of Zen to realize heart-to-heart performance. The leap of life and a vivid stage landscape realized in peace are also advocated by Lin.In addition,Lin Zhaohua's intuitive creation should observe the moderate principle and avoid the arbitrariness of creation.Tian Qinxin's Zen drama seeks to break the boundaries between religion and art.She pursues to achieve the purification of human minds and the realization of a kind of Chinese-style “Catharsis " through the Chinese philosophy—the Zen Buddhism. Also,it attempts to poetize of Zen situations through the " direct " or " indirect "," the coexistence of solemnity and humor, the design of vacant simple space and the narrative function of independent acoustics.Buddhist Dharma thought influences Stan Lai's dramatic creativity. The concept of karma as well as the observation of the nature of things give concrete guidance to the acquisition of creative inspiration. The theory of Buddhism is reconstructed in the form of prototype. The most prominent ones are "Mandala" and "bardo "."Mandala" symbolizes roundness and fullness, and its narrative structure is influenced by the perspective of " bardo ".His works include compassion and altruism as well as the observation of No-self.The internal cause of contemporary director's Buddhist and Zen thoughts is the subjective pursuit of the creator. On the one hand, the creators identify with Buddhist and Zen culture. On the other hand, the unconscious infiltration of traditional culture is also a focal factor. The first external condition is the concept innovation of director art and the promotion of the second westernization, especially the Oriental trend in the western modern theatre. The second condition is the aesthetic change of the audience, the influence of Buddhist and Zen thoughts on Chinese directors including the image of performance, the imagination of space, the creativity of narration and the utility of spirit.Buddhist and Zen thoughts should not be restricted to religious ritual rendering. It should deeply grasp the theories of inner esthetics.Meanwhile, irrational and intuitive thinking represents a useful reference for exploring the diversification of narrative media and the nationalization of drama.
