Shanghai Urban Imagination In Modern Science Fiction(1902-1949)

As the only urban geographical space in modern China,Shanghai appeared in the narrative vision of many science fiction at that time.As Bao Tianxiao wrote in Shanghai Spring and Autumn,"Shanghai is the first city in our country." Under the impact of the western modern science wave,Shanghai,as the representative of Chinese social cities in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China,was experiencing unprecedented advances in economy,technology,industry,etc.In literature,Liang Qichao,Bao Tianxiao,Wu Jianren and other intellectuals based on the concept of time and ideology,imagined Shanghai urban space from both daily and non-daily narratives.And then they constructed the future image of Shanghai in modern science fiction.This thesis attempts to focus on the Shanghai imagination in modern science fiction,to excavate the urban history of Shanghai in the late Qing Dynasty.Through the systematical analysis of the construction of Shanghai urban space in modern science fiction,we will find out the intellectuals' efforts in criticizing the nationality and enlightening the public.In the specific discussion,this thesis will start from the formation of the new space in the concession,the input of the missionaries from the "objects" to the "systems",the translation of the western science fiction and the establishment of writers' group in Shanghai to analyze the historical motivation of science fiction in Shanghai.Subsequently,this thesis will demonstrate the imagination of daily life and non-daily life in modern science fiction in Shanghai.The imagination of transportation,living environment and entertainment measures are based on the convenient transformation of Shanghai residents' daily life.Behind the imagination of the World Expo,the military field and the new school is the modernization and national image of Shanghai in modern times.At the same time,based on the spiritual dimension of Shanghai imagination in science fiction,it reveals the intellectual intention of intellectuals to export their self in the way that readers like to see and hear,and realize the vision of national rejuvenation.They injected scientific elements into popular novels to improve the modern scientific concept of the Chinese and consciously combined science with the real world,to make the aesthetics of daily life move towards science,development and advanced,thus enhancing the leisure interest of the public.Finally,through the analysis of the narrative strategy of Shanghai imagination in modern science fiction,l will explore the new aesthetic paradigm and the thinking mode under multi-dimensional care.
