Inputting of a large number of language materials is an important approach to language acquisition,and English reading has a profound influence on teenagers' language ability and mental development.English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2011 Edition)defines the amount of extracurricular reading in detail that students should achieve in the language skill grading standards,among which,the third level,the fourth level and the fifth level corresponding to the middle schools should reach a total of more than 40,000 words,100,000 words and 150,000 words respectively.However,the actual situation of students' English extracurricular reading is not optimistic,and it embodies the low efficiency,weak motivation and poor reading habits.The main reasons are that students have weak motivation to take English reading,their parents have weak consciousness to cultivate children's reading habits,and the teachers arrange a lot intensive training of language knowledge in the result-oriented standpoint.Therefore,it is imperative for teachers to guide students to carry out independent English reading.With the continuous deepening of the new curriculum reform and the proposal of the core competence of English subject,English reading teaching has gradually formed the development goal of English reading literacy.On this basis,this research makes review about Sustained Silent Reading(SSR)at home and abroad,combining the theories of Input Hypothesis,Readers-response,Reading Motivation and Independent Learning,drawing lessons from Chambers Reading Cycle and the SSR teaching mode in senior high school English literature of Huang Shaozhu.The paper constructed the teaching mode of SSR in junior middle schools according to the characteristics of this specific period of English subject and the English reading level of junior school students.This study carried out a teaching experiment at a school of Shenxian County in Shandong Province.Class 3 of grade two in the junior school is selected as the experimental class,and class 4,whose reading level is equivalent,is selected as the control class.The experimental class carried out the SSR teaching for 18 weeks,while the control class was taught according to the normal curriculum.Through SPSS22.0software data analysis and questionnaire survey,the results showed that the teaching model could have a positive impact on students' reading performance and reading character.It is found that the English teaching mode of SSR in junior middle school can improve students' reading performance and reading quality,which is embodied in the good development of students' reading comprehension test scores,reading habits and reading interests.And it proves that this teaching model is a beneficial attempt in extracurricular reading teaching without hindering the progress of conventional teaching contents.The long-term cultivation of silent reading will be beneficial for junior high school students to understand the charm of English books,find the pleasure of foreign language reading,master the logic of English language and strengthen communication in extracurricular reading.It contributes to the development of junior high school students' English reading literacy.
