In the 1960s and 1970s,a series of changes occurred in the higher education of American women. The number of female college students and the proportion of all students increased, breaking the professional restrictions in colleges and universities. The work that women have done after graduation has also changed. Before these changes, the higher education of American women was experiencing unprecedented challenges. This paper selects the 1960 s and 1970 s as the research interval when the higher education of women developed rapidly in the United States. The causes cover social, political, economic aspects and much more, among which the policy of the US federal government is an important factor to change the situation of the higher education of women, and policy changes in different periods have led to a tortuous process in the development of the higher education of women in the United States.Using historical analysis of primary and secondary data, this thesis explores that in the1960 s and 1970 s,American women were freed from the confinement of conservative thoughts and further developed. The liberation of American women promoted the development of higher education. In addition, the federal government strengthened its intervention in the field of higher education and promoted the progress of gender equality in higher education, laying a solid foundation for the development of modern higher education of American women. This thesis is divided into four chapters. In the introduction part, the reasons for the topic selection, the research status at home and abroad and the research value are explained. The first chapter expounds during the early period after World War II the development of the higher education of American women stagnated, federal government implemented policies that tended to safeguard the interests of men and serious gender discrimination appears in educational thoughts. Thus Women were faced with unequal enrollment rights and difficult to pay for higher education, and women themselves also produced the idea of "going home",making the development of the higher education of women a deadlock. However, during this period, the USeconomy developed rapidly. The third scientific and technological revolution freed women from cumbersome family matters. The changes in social industrial structure increased the demand for female labour, and the federal government strengthened economic intervention in higher education. From the late 1950 s to the 1960 s,American social movements came one after another. The civil rights movement as the theme of the era was almost throughout the 20 th century. It also laid the foundation for the development of minority the higher education of women while striving for the equal rights of blacks, and the feminist movement can be called the concrete embodiment of gender equality in the process of fighting for equal rights, from which mostly benefited the awakening of women’s thoughts. The second chapter explores the role of the US federal government in promoting the development of the higher education of women in the 1960 s and 1970 s.It has introduced a series of policies aimed at promoting gender equality in education. In the legislation of the National Assembly, the law is mainly selected for the development of the higher education of women, including the National Defense Education Law,the Higher Education Law and the 9th Article of the Education Law Amendment. In terms of government measures, this thesis discusses the contribution of the US government in promoting the development of the higher education of women from two aspects: the“affirmative action” policy and the “war on poverty” policy. The third chapter discusses the achievements of the development of the higher education of American women in the 1960 s and 1970 s.In colleges and universities, the number of female college students has increased, and the proportion has expanded.Women have broken the traditional professional restrictions in colleges and universities, and the number of women who have obtained master’s and doctoral degrees has increased year by year. The advancement of women’s education has also affected women’s employment. In addition, this article also explores the development of the special population of American society, minority(including black)women in the field of higher education. The fourth chapter illustrates the impact of the advancement of the higher education of American women in the 1960 s and 1970 s.First, the equality of women’s right to education increases women’s social status, and also promotes women’s equal rights in other aspects of society.Second, women’s progress for the United States has triggered an active social trend of thought, and gender equality in schools has become an irreversible phenomenon. Finally, the development process of the higher educationof women is tortuous and progresses in tortuous ways, making the higher education of women popularized and legalized in the 1960 s and 1970 s.However, this change is short-lived.With the resurgence of conservatism in the 1980 s,the higher education of American women will face new challenges.
