Advocating the equality between men and women the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA)hasn't been written into the Constitution of the U.S.. That means the basic principle of theequality of two sexes in modern society hasn't been acknowledged constitutionally in U.S. —the most developed country in the world, which is really a paradox. This thesis introducesbriefly the whole process of the failure of ERA. Then comes the most important part ─ theanalysis of the reasons of the failure. Finally, the thesis is an analysis of the historicalsignificance of the failure and prospect of ERA.It begins with a brief introduction, leading to the basic content and the significance ofSino-U.S. study in this aspect in academic communities, outlining the framework andmethodology.The main body includes three parts:Part One describes the whole process of background, birth and the early failure, rebirthand the final failure in 1982 of ERA.Part Two analyzes the reasons of the failure comprehensively and thoroughly from fourdifferent angles of ideology, constitutionalism, and conservatism trend of thought and thedispute of women organizations.Part Three discusses the positive and negative historical influence of the failure and thedevelopment of ERA campaign from 1982 to early of the 21st century.The last part is conclusion, which summarizes the reasons again and points to thepractical value of this study for research on Chinese women.
