Under the requirement of fulfilling the fundamental task of strengthening moral education and cultivating people and developing students' key competences,China's newly promulgated "English Curriculum Standards for Senior High Schools" in 2017 clearly put forward the key competences in English,which brings the English curriculum reform of basic education into a new stage of development.At the same time,with the continuous deepening of English curriculum reform,English as a compulsory course,its teaching quality and effect can not be underestimated,so how to implement students' key competences in English teaching has become a research focus at this stage.The teaching of English subject in Junior middle school is the key link to develop students' key competences.Under the background of developing students' key competences in English subject,improving English teaching is an important measure to deepen the reform of English curriculum.On the basis of literature analysis and English teaching situation analysis,this study established key competences framework for junior high school English disciplines.We investigated 480 junior high school students in H Junior High School in Wuhan according to the key competences framework.It was found that the development of junior high school students' language ability was not balanced,their intercultural communicative competence was insufficient,their thinking quality was low,and their awareness of autonomous learning and reflective learning was weak.In addition,we surveyed and interviewed 7 junior high school English teachers at Wuhan H School to have a comprehensive understanding of the problems in the junior high school English teaching.The problems are :Teachers' teaching ideas are backward and lack of understanding of the concept of cultivating key competences in English;The teaching objectives are generalized and modeled,and the target design lacks breadth and depth;English teaching relies too much on teaching materials,and the teaching content lacks the penetration of core literacy;the teaching implementation adheres to the tradition,ignoring English language scenarios and language practice;Teaching evaluation is simplistic,neglecting students Evaluation of thinking and ability.To solve these problems,this study proposes strategies to promote the improvement of English classroom teaching in junior high schools based on key competences in English subject: renewing the concept of English teaching and pointing to key competences in English subject;breaking through the limitations of "three-dimensional goals" and practicing the goals of key competences in English subject;deepening the content of English teaching and enriching the resources of English teaching;carrying out English practice activities in order to improve students' language communication ability;practicing independently explore teaching methods in order to improving students' self-learning ability;improving English teaching evaluation system in order to implement the training of key competences in English subject.In addition,this study also put forward some safeguards to promote the improvement of English teaching: The government should formulate and publicize the policy of cultivating key competences in English;Education departments should support the training of teachers based on key competences in English and school-based research;Schools should create a relaxed English teaching environment and English campus culture;Teachers should enhance English teachers' professional knowledge and professional competence independently.This study consists of five parts: the first part is the introduction,which mainly systematically discusses the reasons,significance,content and methods of the research,as well as the research summary at home and abroad.The second part is to systematically discuss and analyze the connotation and content of Key competences in English subject,to construct the framework and content of junior high school Key competences in English subject,and to provide a theoretical basis for this study.The third part is a investigation for junior high school English teaching in Wuhan H School,to understand the current situation of junior high school English teaching in H School.The fourth part puts forward the teaching improvement strategies based on key competences in English subject from the aspects of teaching concept,teaching objectives,teaching content,teaching methods and teaching evaluation.The fifth part puts forward measures to ensure the smooth progress of English classroom teaching improvement from the perspective of the government,education departments,schools and teachers.Based on the requirements of key competences,this study puts forward some suggestions for English teaching,with a view to providing some inspiration for improving English teaching.
