After the opium war opened China's door,Chinese traditional culture was impacted by foreign culture and underwent unprecedented changes.Western missionaries brought western art into China,while the first batch of Chinese art students brought Chinese art out and brought western art back.The exchanges between Chinese and western trade,economy,art and culture have exerted a profound influence on Chinese art in the future.Teng Baiye was also one of the first art students to go to the United States in the first half of 20 th century.He played a role as an emissary in the communication between Chinese and Western art,and his excellent artistic works and thoughts had a profound influence on the development of modern art in China and western countries.Unfortunately,nowadays,such an artist with excellent knowledge and skills is rarely mentioned in the Chinese art circle.It is not an individual case that an excellent artist like Teng Baiye is forgotten by later generations in the history of Chinese painting in the 20 th century,but Teng Baiye's artistic experience and attainments are typical cases of thinking about how Chinese and western modern art develops under the background of social transformation.The author attempts to reconstruct Teng Baiye's life from the perspective of sociology through limited historical materials and documents,including his artistic experience of studying abroad and artistic events after returning to China,and interpret his finger painting,sculpture and other works of art with iconology and comparative methods;Two-way interaction in Chinese and western art education training,Teng Baiye also highlights the different from the thoughts of the traditional local artists and other artists studying in France or Japan.His ideas is different from some theory of the Chinese fine arts revolution debate,under the influence of "new culture movement".At the same time,his artistic theory still effects the development of American Easel painting and Avant-garde art at the beginning of the 20 th century.Teng Baiye has also made indelible contributions to promoting the development of Chinese modern art and promoting the exchange between Chinese and Western art,which is worth further understanding and learning by future generations.Teng Baiye's case study can make up for the missing chapters in the art history of the Republic of China and make the Chinese art history more complete.
