The Zen of Hui Neng and the Xin-xue of Wang Yang-ming are typical representatives of Chinese Buddhism and Confucianism. In view of the diversity and complementarity of the spiritual life of the Chinese nation, they both form our cultural psychology in different theoretical ways.Based on the environment of Chinese culture attaching importance to "humanism" and the background that Yang-ming's Xin-xue is influenced by Zen and even Buddhism as a whole,Hui-neng's Zen and Yang-ming's Xin-xue present extremely complex integration and different theoretical forms. This point is highlighted in its core categories of "self-nature" and "conscience".Therefore, research about the meaning of "self-nature" and "conscience" in the background of Hui-neng's Zen and Yang-ming's Xin-xue,taking a reasonable comparison between the two,is of great significance to both theoretical and ideological dialogue and realistic spiritual settlement.Hui-neng's "self-nature" also refer to "true Suchness" and "Alaya".As "true Suchness","self-nature" is not the "origin" in the sense of cosmology or the "essence" of metaphysics,it means "the mind of the present which has no improper thought".As “Alaya”,"Self-nature" refers to the "knowledge possession" of nature as empty, which is stained by the uninitiated hypocrisy and vice. The word "self-nature" contains "true Suchness" and "Alaya" in the mind of the present. It is not only "true Suchness-origin" but also "Alaya-origin".The characteristics of "self-nature" mainly include "cleanliness","inaction","wisdom","meditation",and "possession".The "conscience" under Wang Yangming's theory emphasizes more on the side of moral judgment,it is a kind of "moral self-proof" that is different from empirical ideas orconsiderations. This self-aware moral consciousness is based on the concrete "moral emotion" as its realization in reality. In this sense,"conscience" is "the present reality of pure moral consciousness." From the point of view that people give the world a "good," the "free thing" is not what Yang Ming cares about.Under the premise that the objectivity of "free things" exists by default,he emphasizes that "meaningful things" show their own "existence" because of "a little spiritual wisdom of the human heart".In the domain of "generation" in which the host and the guest blend each other,"conscience" as the essence of the universe is reflected as a kind of "nothing outside the mind." In the words of Yang Ming,"conscience" has completed the unity of "having" and "nothing".On this basis, the characteristics of "conscience" are expressed as calm,just,fair.Hui-neng's "self-nature" and Yang-ming's "conscience" have similarities in the way of thinking, but their specific content and realm pursuit have great differences. From the comparison of "realistic mind" and "moral emotion","wisdom of prajna" and "moral judgment","origin world" and "meaning world",the similarities between "self-nature" and "conscience" are mainly reflected in "present nature","non-entity nature","intrinsic nature","awareness",etc..The differences are mainly reflected in the aspects of "ethical value","intellectual content",and "pure and good and evil" that view the world.Hui-neng's Zen and Yang-ming's Xin-xue are both based on Chinese traditional culture,in the theoretical form of blending and difference, they form our inner spiritual world and the pursuit of life value in a complementary way.
