In this globalized world, the communications and exchanges among nations have never been so frequent. Therefore, interpretation plays a vital role in international events in the fields of economy, politics, culture and so on.This report, under the guidance of the cohesive devices of Cohesion Theory proposed by M.A.K.Halliday and R.Hasan, analyzes a consecutive interpretation the author did for the lecture on China held by Longping High-Tech on May 18,2018,which was a part of a foreign aid program.Halliday and Hasan put forward two types of cohesive devices: grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion. The former one includes reference, substitution, ellipsis, and conjunction;and the latter one, which makes texts more coherent by selecting words, includes reiteration and collocation.During this task, the author found that, due to the structure of Chinese Language, the speaking habit of the speaker and the lack of the transcript, there were three kinds of challenges and difficulties for the interpreter, namely the ambiguous reference, redundancy and incorrect and unclear logical relations which could impede the coherence of the output.Coherence, which plays a prominent role in the text,is the inner connection between sentences and paragraphs. In other words, each sentence and paragraph should be connected to make a complete output.Under the guidance of the cohesive devices, this report will find solutions to solve the problems mentioned above by using reference, ellipsis, and lexical cohesion in order to make the interpretation much more coherent as a whole. This report consists of 4 chapters. The first chapter is the task description which includes task background, task features, the requirements of the client and the task process which includes the pre-task preparation and the interpreting process. The second chapter illustrates the theoretical foundation,Cohesion Theory proposed by Halliday and Hasan, including the definition of the theory and the cohesive devices, especially ones that are applied in this report. The third chapter is the case analysis under the guidance of three targeted cohesive devices,i.e.reference,ellipsis and lexical cohesion. The author figures out the challenges in the interpretation practice and the proposed corresponding interpretation tactics in order to testify the applicability of the theory in interpreting,by analyzing both good practices and those need to be improved. In the last chapter, the author summarizes the whole event and demonstrates the feedback from the client. In the conclusion part, the author proposes the prospect for future study and work,in order to provide some suggestions for future interpretation practices.
