In the long history of the development of film and television, documentaries stand out for their unique documentary property and become a popular art form. The essence of film and television art is visual expression.Documentary,as a visual art, uses its unique audio-visual language to narrate the complete story content.Through the objective record of reality, the photographer conveys reality, expresses emotion and conveys profound ideological connotation. The visual expression of documentaries is not a general concept, but a large collection, which includes lens, color, light, composition and audio-visual synaesthesia, that these small parts together construct the big concept of visual expression.Based on the theory of visual expression in documentaries, this paper takes the graduation documentary The Story of Ida's nest as a case study.Explore the polysemy of lens expression, and the auxiliary role of color, light, composition and sound in the whole visual expression.Tracing back to the film itself and talking with pictures and lenses can make the whole film look smooth and vivid.Through the picture expression, the audience can immerse themselves in the day-dream created by the film and enjoy the unique visual pleasure and reality created by the film.Consequently,it's better resonate with the characters in the film, understand the profound connotation conveyed in the film. The balance between "Tech" and "Tao" is also a key issue that can not be ignored in the field of documentary visual expression. How to achieve artistic expression on the basis of guaranteeing the authenticity of story telling is a subject we should always explore. This paper combines theory with practice to explore the art of visual expression in documentaries.
