This report intends to study how the author finishes the translation of When Albums Ruled the World under the guidance of the Target Audience-Centered Principle of Cognitive Consonance, which is the pivotal principle of the Relevance-Adjustability Theoretic Approach to the Translating Process(李占喜,2007).In her translation process, the author employed different pragmatic translation strategies(including indirect translation,amplification,footnote-adding,transliterating and cultural image transferring)and made new linguistic choices that are more appropriate for the target readers.By doing so,the author intended to reduce the processing effort of audiences and achieve the best contextual effects,in the end to reach the receptor audiences’cognitive consonance.During the documentary translation guided by Relevance-Adjustability Theoretic Approach, the translator keeps adjusting her target linguistic choices to the receptor audience, motivated by her different psychological aspects. The documentary translation is a cross-cultural communication between the original subtitle writer and the target audiences. To establish a successful communication, the translator is always adapting to the cognitive environment of the original subtitle to find the optimal relevance during the discourse interpreting process;and adjusting her target utterance-constructing to reduce the receptor audiences’ processing efforts during discourse producing process. All adjustments the translator made are for one purpose: to ensure the receptor audiences’ cognitive consonance by putting them as center.
