This report analyses how the author prepares, proceeds and reviews the translation of A Story of Yang Jiang(C hapter?)(?????)within the framework of Li Zhanxi's Relevance-Adjustability Theoretic Approach to the translating process(???2007).Biography,characterized by its historicity and literariness,is an encyclopaedia of a person's life.Biographies of celebrities, public figures,or those who have their own impressive stories usually prevail among readers.A Story of Yang Jiang, written by Luo Yinsheng(???),is one of these biographies. The writer, after obtaining Yang Jiang's(??)first-hand information at her dictation, narrates her undulating life in a mild and sober tone. The book mainly covers her childhood, family vicissitudes, academic pursuit and literary creation as well as her unswerving affection for Q ian Zhongshu(???).Her stories reflect an image of a talented lady and virtuous wife who is learned, wise and graceful. They are worth of being widespread. Thus,it is significant to translate this book, which conforms to the trend of implementing the strategy of“Going Global”for Chinese culture. The report approaches how the author finishes her translation task. She first reads intensively the source text and related parallel texts, then she tries to translate it with the help of all possible tools, such as bilingual dictionaries and online translation applications.Based on this, she makes a glossary for her later use. After her review of previous researches into the source text, she comments on others' findings and voices her own views.Next she chooses an appropriate theoretical basis to guide her translation practice. She regards translation as a communication that is cognition-based and context-dependent.Li Zhanxi's proposal of a new translation paradigm based on Sperber's and Wilson's Relevance Theory(1986/1995)and Verschueren's Adaptation Theory(1999)is such a theoretical paradigm which expounds that translation is a relevance-seeking,ostensive-inferential and dynamically-adjusting process. To explore it,he divides the whole translating process into Discourse-Interpreting Communicative Process and Discourse-Producing Communicative Process. The former involves the translator's interpretation of the source utterances while the latter involves the expression of the target utterances. The ultimate goal of the translator is to correctly convey the writer's informative intention and communicative intention and ensure the target audience's cognitive consonance. So in this report, the author, taking her renderings as casestudy, analyses how to prepare for the pre-task,how to make post-task assessment and how to apply the selected approach to the whole translating process. In addition, some specific translatingstrategies are concluded, translationdifficulties are spotted out,its findings, translation problems and possible solutions, limitations as well as suggestions are summarized. All in all, this report intends to give an account of the author's mental workingsin her translating process.By systematically concluding the translation task, the author gets to know her shortcomings and has a clear idea to improve her language skills as well as abilities in task-organization.
