In the era of economic globalization,an increasing number of cross-border legal issues have been brought about.Bilingual legal texts are both rising in number and importance.Under such circumstances,an accurate translation of legal texts can help readers properly understand laws and regulations of foreign countries and learn the latest developments in legal system.This report is written on the basis of the translation of an article in a law studies journal.The source text,“The New Governors: The People,Rules,and Processes Governing Online Speech”,is selected from Harvard Law Review.It discusses how major online platforms moderate online speech under First Amendment and relevant regulations.The translation of this article aims to provide legal guidance and reference to online speech regulating in China.Guided by text typology theory,this report first analyzes the nature and features of the source text.During the translation practice,the author follows the translation principles of accuracy,consistency and formality.This report discusses the translation practice at the lexical and syntactic level.At the lexical level,the difficulty lies in terminology and metaphor translation.The author applies the methods of literal translation,amplification and context adaptation and at the mean time ensures the consistency and formality.At the syntactic level,methods to change parts of speech and the voice,division,word order adjustment and amplification are adopted to translate the nominalization structures,and long and complex sentences.
