Dialogue is an effective approach to shaping character images,to promoting the development of story plots and expressing the theme of literary works.Dialogues are usually carefully arranged by authors in order to show character conflicts and to lead to characters' actions. In addition, characters' dialogues can also be used as emotional carriers to convey the feelings the author wants readers to experience. When translating tragic works,it is necessary for translators to carefully consider the emotional factors in the dialogue, that is,the tragic sense mentioned in this thesis, and to reflect it in the translation,so as to help target readers to grasp and understand the original works more accurately.Speech Act Theory is a very important theory in the pragmatics module. Its concepts of locutionary act, illocutionary act and perlocutionary act can be adopted to effectively analyze dialogues and discuss the functions of dialogues in texts. This thesis takes two Chinese versions,Wu Ningkun's version and Yao Naiqiang's version,of the novel The Great Gatsby as the texts, and selects the dialogues in them as the research objects. It takes Speech Act Theory as the theoretical basis, and makes some changes on Duan Yun's model for studying “illocutionary force” to analyze and understand the tragic sense embodied in the dialogues of characters in this novel. Then,by comparing the two Chinese versions which are translated by Wu Ningkun and Yao Naiqiang,it discusses which translation tips can help the target texts better reflect the tragic sense,so as to improve the quality of the translation of character dialogues. This thesis discusses the embodiment of tragic sense in novels from dialogues, which is a comparatively new perspective.Starting from Speech Act Theory,it points out that the success or failure of communication in novels' dialogues can reflect the tragic sense and promote the development of stories towards the tragic ends.By studying the model of "illocutionary force",the process of communication and the generation of tragic sense can be understood. Then, the author chooses four aspects that can promote the development of the plot and function as the reference for selecting dialogues, and evaluates the two Chinese versions of the dialogues in The Great Gatsby.Through analyzing the details that can reinforce the illocutionary force and lead to the results to embody the tragic sense,it finally comes up with relevant tips that can help the translation reach the purpose, including choosing the appropriate words according to the speaker's educational background, selecting the subject in the translation according to the speaker's intention, and using appropriate words according to the speaker's emotion and attitude.
