Set in the first half of the 20 th century,Bai Lu Yuan depicts the ups and downs of two families-Bai and Lu.It creates a series of vivid characters: Bai Jiaxuan and Mr Zhu,like many other villagers,internalize the Confucian values;whereas Lu Zilin,his sons and Hei Wa respond to the changing era and adjust their life strategies;female characters like Tian Xiao'e and Bai Ling fight against male chauvinism.Different people's different choices when facing new trends stimulate people to rethink the contemporary transformation of traditional culture.Their obedience or resistance to traditional culture also mirrors its profound influence on China's rural society.By analyzing the main characters and their relationships,this dissertation aims to explore the essence of Confucian culture and the contemporary values of traditional culture.
