The source text of this translation project is based on Chapter 8 of Internet of Things — From Hype to Reality: The Road to Digitization that is co-written by Ammar Rayes and Samer Salam and is published in 2017.The selected source text focuses on defining the key IoT security and privacy requirements, which is vital to the application of IoT and the objects connected. This report focuses on applying Nida's functional equivalence theory to translating this introductory textbook, wishing to provide some cases or references for the English to Chinese translation on IoT.The translator summarizes those methods and principles adopted during the translation process at lexical, syntactical and textual levels.First,on lexical level, the translator should make sure key words, both technical terms and none-technical terms,be translated not only accurately but also vividly to maintain the message the text conveying as well as the unique writing style of the authors.Second,on syntactical level, source text can be translated following syntactic linearity or restructured into several chunks to better adapt to Chinese expression habit.Third,on textual level, hidden messages should be expressed in the target text and changes should be made to better adapt to the target language habit, which recreates response of target-text readers closest to that of the source-text readers. In conclusion, for the purpose of accurate transmission of knowledge of science and technology, target text shall try to achieve the closest equivalence in original text.
