This project takes the first five chapters of The Red Recipe, the first novel by Bi Shumin,a famous Chinese writer as object, translates it into English from Chinese and performs some research on the basis of its translation in combination with register theory,a branch of Functional Grammar by Halliday.Pegged on medicine materials and focused on the discourse between Shen Ruoyu and Jian Fangning, this novel tells the story about the heroine Jian Fangning,a doctor who was dedicated to developing and testing the Chinese medicine for detoxing but was framed by her patient ZhuangYu,ending up being addicted to drugs and killing herself with the red recipe. With the guidance of the register theory,a branch of Functional Grammar by Halliday, this report conducts an observation of the concrete performances of field, mode and tenor in the translation process, explores into the strategies of how to effectively transform the three factors of field, mode and tenor which are encountered during the translation practice and finally discovers some difficult points. The major task of this translation is to bring to light how to translate into English the speaking manners and mood occurring in the original text. For this, the author analyzes, mulls over and studies carefully the speaking manners and mood in the selected chapters and then does some classifications of them.By referring to the strategies and skills previously employed in literature translation and on the basis of elaborating the relationships between the register theory and the translation, the project puts forward some translation strategies targeting different moods and modality, which helps pave the way for the effective path of explicating future translation practice and translational phenomena, and thus ensures the coherence and naturalness of translation as well as the balance between the conveyance of linguistic meanings and maintenance of the original linguistic style during translation. This project consists of four parts. The first part is the general description of the translation task, including the background, significance, purpose and structure of this project and a brief introduction to the source text;Following the first part is the description of the translation process, which contains the preparations and proofreading;the sketch of the register theory as well the discussion about the rendering of different moods and modality is included in the third part;the third part is concerned with case study, focusing on the description of the coping methods in detail by analyzing the difficulties from the perspective of the register theory;and the final part is the conclusion of this project.
