On The Exile Theme Of Short Stories By Nabokov | Posted on:2020-12-29 | Degree:Master | Type:Thesis | Country:China | Candidate:L Yang | Full Text:PDF | GTID:2415330590957043 | Subject:Comparative Literature and World Literature | Abstract/Summary: | PDF Full Text Request | Nabokov had a personal experience of exile.It almost accompanied Nabokov’s lifetime from Russia to Western Europe,to Western Europe,to the United States,and finally to Europe in his later years.In addition,as a special way of life,exile became an important material for his creation.In particular,his short stories were focused on the hero’s exile experience.In this paper,Nabokov’s short stories are studied wholly,and close attention is paid to the different artistic features of the "exile" theme in different chapters.The paper is divided into four parts.In the introduction,the life and creation of Nabokov are summarized.The national and foreign research status of Nabokov’s works especially his short stories is sorted out.Due to the long absence of the translation of his short story collection,the domestic research achievements are limited in this field.In the research background,the reason why the "exile" theme is taken as the research focus is explained.In the "exile" dilemma of the first chapter,twelve short stories are mainly analyzed,such as The Wood Sprite,Natasha and The Word.The various dilemmas of exiles are all showed.After expelled,the exiles were outside Russia.Because of the constant political oppression in the place of exile,they lost their due rights and were out of life.In addition,the vagabond and turbulent way of life made their intimate relationship unsustainable so that they became lonely.In the second chapter,some short stories are discussed specially such as Russian Spoken Here and Easter Rain.All kinds of ways of Russian exiles to reproduce their homeland in foreign countries are showed in these stories.Firstly,the presence of language,literature and tradition is adopted to make up for the absence of "Russia";Secondly,their common lover-Russia is reproduced in the dimension of memory.In the third chapter,how the exiles sought exits actively in some short stories such as A Guide To Berlin,A Dashing Fellow and Perfection is discussed mainly.The exiles looked at the world with surprise,treated others with curiosity and gentleness,broke through difficulties with unremitting efforts,and strived to realize their own value.Looking at short stories of Nabokov,it is not difficult to find that his writing of exile is his insight into this special way of life.In addition,the way of exile described by him is behind the "exile" theme from "being oppressed" to "resistance" and freedom,from the loss of everything to searching for and discovering self.It is about the exploration of Nabokov on the ultimate problem of human existence. | Keywords/Search Tags: | Nabokov, Short story, Exile, Russia | PDF Full Text Request | Related items |
