A Report On The C-E Translation Of Code For Design Of Concrete Structures Of Railway Bridge And Culvert

This report is about the Chinese to English Translation of the Code for Design of Concrete Structures of Railway Bridge and Culvert,a collaborative translation project with the help of the computer-aided translation tool.The author was responsible for the translation of about 16,000 Chinese characters of this project.The report begins with the introduction to the translation project,then emphasizes its significance,analyzes the requirements of the client and clarifies the main structures of the report.After that,the report reviews the work before,during and after the translation,and then focuses on the explanation of the definitions and features of technical terms and the introduction to the principles adopted as the guidance for translating technical terms.It is worthy to note that with the study of abundant cases,some general rules and techniques have been figured out by the author for translating technical terms of words and phrases,including the single morpheme technical terms,technical terms made up of two or more morphemes,modifier-head technical terms,technical terms with affixes or geometric meaning,and those complicated ones constructed of multiple words.The following conclusions are drawn from this translation project:(1)the application of various search tools and the improvement of search abilities are the keys to ensuring the high-quality translations of the technical terms arising in scientific and technical texts;(2)though some general translation rules can be figured out from the perspective of word structure,it still remains great importance to search for the correct translations with the flexible use of different search methods;(3)the employment of the computer-aided translation tool turns out to be a strong support for improving the translation efficiency and ensuring its quality.This report is aimed at offering some inspirations for translators in relevant fields to translate the technical terms by the suggestion of some general rules and term search methods,and also encouraging translators to promote their competence for term translation.
