Translation as a communicative act has provided an efficient way for the cultural exchange among different countries and regions.From the perspective of translation history in China,the content of translation in a certain period is closely related to the society and politics of that period.The Spanish Empire is one of the first global empire and colonial empire in the world.Besides,it is also one of the largest empires in world history and is considered as the first empire on which the sun never sets.Spain experienced its golden age during the 16^th and 17^th century,and its influence began to fade in the mid-17^th century.In the book Imperial Spain 1469-1716,the author J.H.Elliott narrates the vicissitudes of Spain Empire,and objectively describes and analyzes the reasons for the demise of this empire from the aspects of society,politics,economy and international relations,which provides new perspectives for the study of Spanish history.China as a major country in Asia was also once the most influential country in the world,and great rejuvenation of Chinese nation has been set as one of its goals.In this regard,the research of history of Spain Empire is of significance to some extent.This translation report is written on the basis of the translation of the Chapter Seven of the book Imperial Spain 1469-1716,and the translation is under the guidance of Verschueren's adaptation theory.The author of this translation report first describes the background of this translation task and makes elaborate introduction and analyses to the source text.Then translation procedures are presented in detail,followed by the theoretical framework and status quo of adaptation theory.The focus of this translation report lies in the case study,in which part the author of this report analyzes the problems confronted in this translation through four dimensions of adaptation theory,which are contextual correlates of adaptability,structural objects of adaptability,the dynamics of adaptability,and the salience of adaptation process.Through this translation practice,the author of this report gains a better understanding of translation activity,including translation procedures,translation skills and the application of theories.This translation is helpful for Chinese readers to learn Spanish history due to the fact that there has been no Chinese version of this book.Besides,the author of this report analyzes this translation objectively under the guidance of adaptation theory,and substantiates the explanatory power of this theory.
