In the modern theatre,there are always two writers in the creation of drama.One is the writer who creates the script,the other is the director who interprets the stage creation.In the process of creation,the two have different pursuits for the expression of drama.The former respects ‘the spirit of text' while the latter advocates ‘the spirit of director'.In the development of drama,these two spirits are unified in drama from time to time,but at the same time,they are confronted by the change of expression.This contradictory relationship has a significant impact on the development of drama,especially all kinds of modern dramatic thoughts and phenomena arise from the extreme confrontation between them.Starting from the history and theory of Western drama,this thesis reviews the state of drama in different periods,makes a clear analysis of the contradictory relationship between ‘the directing spirit' and ‘textual spirit',and reflects on the general state and development trend of contemporary Chinese small theatre drama under the influence of this relationship.The overall framework of this thesis is as follows:The introduction part of the first chapter summarizes the general idea of this paper,outlines the contradiction between ‘the textual spirit' and ‘the directing spirit',expounds the meaning boundary of the two,and explores the research steps of this paper.The second chapter focuses on the historical evolution of the textual spirit and the directing spirit.Taking the emergence of the ‘director' in modern drama as a node,this article divides the history of Western drama into two parts,analyses the evolution process of ‘textual spirit' and ‘directing spirit' in the historical development of Western drama,explores the dramatic events,claims and theories in different periods,and combs the fundamental reasons for the contradiction between those two spirits.The third chapter focuses on the analysis of the confrontation between directing spirit and textual spirit.In the Western Theatre influenced by Alto's theatre view,the post-modern theatre advocates the director spirit and negates the textual spirit in theory and practice.This article clarifies the fundamental influence of the contradiction between the directing spirit and the textual spirit on the theatre from the trend of the post-modern recession and the return of the neo-realist theatre.Viewing the present from the perspective of history,the last chapter reflects on the development of contemporary experimental theatre in China,compares the differences in theatrical concepts between contemporary experimental theatre in China and western post-modern drama,explores the influence of the contradictory relationship between ‘directing spirit' and ‘textual spirit' on contemporary Chinese drama,and essentially analyses the development trend and obstacles of contemporary experimental theatre in China from the perspective of phenomena.Generally speaking,this article aims to clarify the contradictory relationship between ‘directing spirit' and ‘textual spirit' in the history of Western drama,to reflect on the fundamental role and influence of the two spirits on drama creation and expression,and to reflect on the development of contemporary experimental theatre in China.
