Case Study On Cognitive Equivalence Of C-E Translation Of Chinese Stock Words

Nowadays,Chinese stock market relates closely to the global stock market.The rise and fall of China's stock market has also attracted worldwide attention.In the research of translation equivalence in the stock market,the study on E-C translation is in the majority,while the achievements on C-E translation are relatively less.In the former studies,when it comes to the study of translation equivalence in C-E translation,it is often expounded from the aspects of phonetic equivalence,semantic equivalence and pragmatic equivalence,or from the perspectives of formal equivalence and cultural equivalence,but it seldom involves the cognitive equivalence.This thesis studies the cognitive equivalence of the English translation of the Chinese words on stock market by analyzing the cases in the English translation practice of Operating stocks in chapter one and two.Based on the theory of cognitive translation,this thesis divides the stock market vocabulary into two categories: literal stated vocabulary and non-literal stated vocabulary which can be subdivided into conceptual metaphorical vocabulary,conceptual metonymic vocabulary and conceptual metaphtonymic vocabulary.Based on the analysis of the language structure of those words,this thesis summarizes some methods and strategies to realize cognitive equivalence in English translation,which include methods of literal translation,free translation,transliteration plus literal translation and literal translation with annotation,and domestication strategy,making it possible to achievemaximum equivalence in experience,meaning,conceptualization and form.Therefore,it is helpful to the C-E translation of the words on Chinese stock market.This thesis summarizes the following translation methods and strategies on Chinese stock words based on the English translation practice of Operating Stocks.Among those literal words on Chinese stock,some are proper nouns,some are ordinary words and some are proper nouns with geographic names,person names or corporation names.Literal translation method is adopted for the former two,while transliteration plus literal translation method is the best option for the latter one.Meanwhile,for most non-literal words on Chinese stock,literal translation and free translation methods are recommended for them;however,literal translation with annotation method is the best choice for some of the conceptual metonymic words;and domestication strategy is employed for some of the conceptual metaphtonymic words.
