Due to cultural differences, the loss of meaning is inevitable in translating from the source language into the target language. In order to retain the feature of the original work as much as possible and make the readers experience the emotion and glamour within it,the compensation of translation becomes a necessity. When it comes to specific compensation strategy, however,it is a choice up to the translator, which shall be made after weighing various factors according to the actual case of the original work. This thesis discusses the translation of I Shall Not Hate,an autobiography of a Palestinian doctor, and talks about the application of compensation theory in the translation of autobiography from both perspectives of explicit and implicit compensation as well as the specific compensation strategies. In regard of explicit compensation, this thesis primarily covers footnotes and in-text annotations used to deliver the cultural message of the source text but also have the consequence of interrupting readers once overdone. In terms of implicit compensation, this thesis focuses on the application of amplification. While being faithful to the original text, amplification can sufficiently compensate the loss of content and aesthetic conception that happens during translation.
