Today,Chinese and foreign cultural exchanges are closely linked. And English translation of classics is receiving more and more attention. The Journey to the West,as one of China's classical classics,it has a close relationship to traditional Chinese culture. The fascinating storyline of this novel is so full of praise. The poems in The Journey to the West make the characters, plots, scenes full of fun and appeal.Reduplicated words in the poems can be characterized as the icing on the cake.Reduplicated words are a unique language form in China.Hence, how to present the characteristics of the reduplicated words in the poems of The Journey to the West in English translation is an important breakthrough in conveying Chinese cultural identity.“Beauty in sound, sense and form” are important features of the reduplicated words. This paper divides the reduplicated words in The Journey to the West into two types: complete reduplicated words and incomplete reduplicated words according to their overlapping degree of sound, sense and form. This study takes Jenner's version and Yu Guofan's version as the main case to explore the English translation of the reduplicated words from the perspective of Xu Yuanchon's “Tri-Beauty Theory”.It is proposed to solve two major problems:(1)What is the rule for the two translators in translating the reduplicated words?(2)Have the two translations successfully reproduced the characteristics of the reduplicated words in the poems of The Journey to the West? This paper finds that the two translators' translation methods can be reduced to five methods by comparing Jenner's and Yu's version, namely, the method of conversion, omission, grammatical models, synonymous or parallel phrase and onomatopoeic words. From the perspective of “Tri-Beauty Theory”,this study discovers that Jenner's version focuses on the literal translation or omission of the reduplicated words, which doesn't present “Tri-Beauty” of the reduplicated words well. And because of this,it makes the mood of the entire translated verse somewhat inexpressive. The translation of Yu concentrates on the details, emphasizing on the antithesis of the original sentence and the characteristics of the reduplicated words.Yu Guofan has made the translated version of the reduplicated words show the feature of “Tri-Beauty” through the precise use of words and other methods, and deliver the atmosphere in the original book. This study hopes to provide a preliminary reference for the teaching and practice of the English translation of reduplicated words in other classics and hopes to provide some favorable information about the research of reduplicated words in other fields in the future.
