| The thesis makes an attempt to study the categorial re-correspondence in the course of English-Chinese translation from the perspective of Cognitive Linguistics.Based on the related literature, categories can be re-corresponded in the process of translating English into Chinese, for Chinese and English belong to two different language families respectively.Consequently, the linguistic re-categorization is indispensable to transformation from one language to another.Accordingly, three research questions are addressed as follows:(1)What is characterized by categorial re-correspondence in the course of English-Chinese translation and what types of categorial re-correspondence are there in the course of English-Chinese translation?(2)What underlies the cognitive mechanism of categorial re-correspondence in the course of English-Chinese translation at the lexical level, the sentential level and the textual level respectively?(3)What kinds of translation skills are employed for categorial re-correspondence in the course of English-Chinese translation? In order to answer the three research questions, the Theory of Categorization is adopted as the theoretical framework for a detail analysis of the lexical, the sentential and the textual categorial re-correspondence in the course of English-Chinese translation.Firstly,it is found that the lexical categorial re-correspondence is pervasively available at both vertical axis and horizontal axis in the form of word-class mismatching and semantic asymmetry.Secondly,it indicates that the sentential categorial re-correspondence finds its way in the inconsistent tense or voice in both English and Chinese. Finally,it is shown that the textual categorial re-correspondence fluctuates between English and Chinese textual organization in either prototypical or non-prototypical texts. The research points to the conclusion that categorial re-correspondence is closely related to different cognitive modes between English-speaking and Chinese-speaking people.Besides, the constant variance of context is also crucial to categorial re-correspondence to a certain extent. To this regard, three translation skills are developed as follows:(1)concord method;(2)the method of adjustment;(3)the semantic method. It concludes by claiming that the result of this thesis is of some help to Cognitive Linguistics, translation studies and foreign language teaching in China. It is hoped that futureresearch of this kind will be encouraged to pay more attention to the integration of the theory of Cognitive Linguistics and translation studies. |
