Published by Routledge in January 2010,the source text Exploring Translation Theories, was written by Anthony Pym,an Australian professor and translator.Exploring Translation Theories is a summary of contemporary western translation theories. The book introduces in detail about the six paradigms that emerged from the1960 s till now — equivalence, purpose, description, uncertainty, localization and cultural translation. The translation practice is completed by six students together. The translator is responsible for the translation task from the summary of Chapter VI to the whole body of Chapter VII.This book is a piece of academic work on western translation theories without any published Chinese version. Thus, translating the book may not only offer a reference on the six paradigms in western translation theories to translation learners, but also improve the translator's ability and skills in translation.Translation theory and practice cannot be separated. The translator analyzes the typical cases of the source text from four levels — lexical, syntactic, textual and cultural level.Skopos theory is the guiding theory in the translation process.Because the source text is an informative text which aims to introduce the academic information about western theories to Chinese translation learners, the translation strategies of communicative-dominated and semantic-assisted translation are adopted so as to introduce the academic information about western translation theories.Guided by Skopos theory, some translation skills like word extension, amplification, omission, etc.are adopted in the translation practice.Through this translation practice, the translator finds that her translation skills have been improved and the sense of team spirit has been enhanced as well.Yet there are still some limitations in the translation practice, which may require the translator to enhance her translation skills and make further progress.
