AReport On The C-E Translation Of State-Listed Famous Historical And Cultural City Protection Ordinance For Suzhou From The Perspective Of Relevance Theory

In the context of "the Belt and Road Initiative",legal document translation plays a vital role in promoting legal services and foreign cooperation and exchanges with China,and even has a bearing on the international image of China as a country under the rule of law.Moreover,the translation of legal documents,especially the translation of legal documents with Chinese characteristics,will facilitate the overseas promotion of Chinese culture.This project report puts forward some approaches to lexical,syntactical and stylistic difficulties arising from the particularity of such texts by analyzing the articles in her rendering under the guidance of Relevance Theory.As a means of intercultural communication,legal document translation aims to convey specific legal regulations stipulated in specific cultural contexts to target audience from different cultural backgrounds.Therefore,it is of great significance to choose an appropriate translation theory for guidance.In 1986,Sperber and Wilson put forward the Relevance Theory,pointing out that the most important factor determining the quality of rendering is to find the optimal relevance between the source text and the target text,and that the optimal relevance can be created by manifestation and inference in a specific "context".In this regard,Relevance Theory caters for legal document translation for it emphasizes on the specific context and relevance in communication.Under the guidance of Relevance Theory,major difficulties in translating State-Listed Famous Historical and Cultural City Protection Ordinance for Suzhou are analyzed in the report and the following practical translation methods are suggested.At the lexical level,literal translation,loan translation,adaption are applied;at the syntactic level,conversion of voices,division and adjustment of sentence order are employed;at the stylistic level,precise diction,coherent clauses and concise sentence are adopted.In conclusion,the author summarizes that it is feasible to guide legal document translation with Relevance Theory.At the same time,it is pointed out that the readability of the target text can be enhanced by taking full consideration of the target reader’s cognitive environment so as to establish the optimal relevance between the source text and the target text in translation practice.By translating this ordinance and writing the practice report,the author has had a deeper understanding of such texts,and has improved her translation as well as English writing ability.It is hoped that useful references can be found in this translation project report for relevant translations and researches in the coming days.
