In the late Qing Dynasty, there were many charities in Kunshan, that engaged in traditional charitable deeds mainly focusing on life assistance.Since the Republic of China,Kunshan had set up many new charity and public welfare organizations, which had played an important role in guaranteeing the basic life of the poor, increasin g children's educational opportunities and maintaining social security. Then we could see that the following changes had taken place in the charity and public welfare enterprises of kunshan in modern times:Organizationally, from disperse to unified,it broke through the pattern of small communities, and had been formed a large-scale charitable organization network in both urban and rural areas.Ideally, from negative to positive, the way of rescue had changed from "attaching importance to upbringing while neglecting education" to "both education and upbringing".In moderm times, the charitable and public welfare organizations of Kunshan maintained a good cooperative relationship with the local government, but there were still some conflicts and frictions between the officials and the people. In addition, there were two modes of charitable development, one was Jiujiyuan, whose development mainly relied on the leadership and decision-making of local governments and elites, the other was Jiuhuolianhehui, besides the help of local governments and the leadership of elites, absorbed the broad masses of grassroots people to participate in the activities. The latter had strong vitality and charisma in society, leading the people of Kunshan to protect their homes and defend their country, strengthening the cohesion of the grassroots society, and then strengthening their national consciousness and spirit.
