| Pearl S.Buck(1892-1973)is an American writer of dual cultural identity.Living in China for about forty years, she portrays an epic on China peasants and land---The House of Earth, which shows her global perspective and ecological vision. This thesis applies eco-criticism and its related theories to explore Pearl S.Buck’s ecological thoughts indicated in The House of Earth. This thesis holds the idea that Buck reveals her transcendent and far-sighted ecological insights in The House of Earth in three demensions, namely the relationship between man and nature, woman and man as well as the relationship between cultures. These three demensions are progressive, and they belong to a systematic ecological thought system. In this thesis, the transcendence and return of Buck’s ecological ideal in The House of Earth will be expounded step by step from the three dimensions.First of all,Pearl S.Buck, from the relationship between man and nature, expresses her desire for harmony between man and nature by describing the Wangs’ nature worship and land complex. Then,Buck highlights the brilliance of women and expresses her hope for equality between men and women, and destruction of the root of inequality between man and nature---patriarchy by virtue of displaying the wholeness of O-lan and land, the construction of O-lan’s self-consciousness along with the change of Wang Lung’s attitudes towards O-lan.Last but not least,Buck tries to construct harmonious cultural relations by looking for common grounds between Christianity and Confucianism and shaping a hybrid of Eastern and Western culture. In this way,Buck expects that different countries,on the basis of mutual understanding and tolerance, can join hands to return to nature and collaboratively work for the sustainable development of ecologyDifferent from the traditional "ecology",the meaning of "ecology" in this thesis is more abundant and profound, including harmony between man and nature, gender harmony and cultural harmony. In the context of deterioration of the ecological environment, gender inequality, cultural conflicts and the gradual promotion of globalization, the research of this thesis is of great practical significance. |
