In modern society,knowledge and information can be obtained through a variety of ways,and reading is one of the main ways.The study of English and other knowledge of languages is no exception.In the process of learning English,people are required to be proficient in listening,speaking,reading and writing skills.Reading plays a key role in this learning process.Therefore,it is especially important to cultivate middle school students’ reading ability in education and teaching.The main research content of this paper is the teaching method of reading skills and strategies for the seventh grade students in middle school.The author combines the relevant theories in pedagogy with the experience summarized in the teaching process,and uses the literature method,questionnaire survey method and interview method to conduct an in-depth exploration.This paper expounds the importance of reading strategy instruction to improve students’ reading ability.Some investigations were used to know about the current situation of the seventh grade students’ English reading in order to reveal the existing problems of English reading teaching.This research was based on reading strategy theory.And the author designed the integrated instruction mode in reading teaching.The author conducted a survey on 76 students of the seventh grade in middle school.Two classes of students were chosen for the purpose of the experiment,one as the experimental class and the other as the controlled class.Go for it!was regarded as the main reading and teaching materials.The experiment lasted over a period of thirteen weeks.The investigation revealed that the seventh grade students sometimes employed English reading strategies.Social/affective strategies were employed the most frequently.Students sometimes used cognitive strategies.The least frequently used strategies were metacognitive strategies.Some factors might contribute to the use characteristics of English reading strategies,such as the test-oriented nature of English teaching in middle schools,physiological features of middle school students,and their learning context.After reading strategy instruction,it showed that the experimental class had improved significantly compared with the controlled class,which indicated that the strategy instruction helped to improve the reading ability of students.At the same time,the seventh grade students had a positive attitude towards the effectiveness of English reading strategy instruction.The author summarized the effective reading strategies for students and hoped to improve the current situation of middle school English reading instruction through the results of this research.The author also provided suggestions and help to improve students’ reading ability.This research is significant to English reading instruction in middle school.The results of the research have demonstrated that integrated instruction of reading strategies into classroom teaching in middle school is practical and effective.And the significance also lies in that it can help students find pleasure in reading and experience satisfaction in learning the English language,which is essential in developing their learning autonomy.
