In EFL teaching in China, reading is universally acknowledged to be a prior language skill. However, the results of the teaching of reading are not so satisfactory. Since Goodman's psycholinguistic model was put forward (1967:1971), reading has been viewed as an interactive process and a cognitive skill rather than a passive and static process. As a result, the focus of reading research has been shifted from the outcome of reading to a description and investigation of the reading process, which gives rise to the issue of reading strategies. In the past few decades, researches on learning strategies have been conducted by many researchers in EFL learning at home and abroad. It is indicated that learning strategies instruction is the key factor in enhancing foreign language teaching and learning. However, the previous researches were mostly concerned with the students in college and university as participants in their researches. Very little research has been done on reading strategies instruction in five-year normal schools in China. In five-year normal schools, the English course time is very limited compared to its teaching contents, which usually leads to students'poor performance in English learning. Improving the students'reading efficiency as well as developing their autonomous learning is one possible approach to settle this problem. Thus, how to help the students to read efficiently is really crucial for teachers. This thesis attempted to improve the students'reading proficiency and their self-directed learning by implementing reading strategies instruction in English reading. The instructional framework is Integrating Strategic Reading in L2 Instruction(ISRI) put forward by Joy Janzen and Fredericka L.Stoller(1998). To investigate the use of reading strategies during the reading process in EFL learning and reading proficiency, the following specific questions were addressed in the present experimental study:(1) Does reading strategies instruction in English reading improve students'reading proficiency?(2) Does reading strategies instruction in English reading improve students'...
