A Report On The Translation Of Text Of Patent Office Action Under The Guidance Of Skopos Theory

With the rapid development of economic globalization,enterprises in various countries have been increasingly aware of technology protection,and protect their intellectual property rights by applying for patents at home and abroad.The translation of patent documents plays an important role in the international competition of enterprises.In the context of globalization,the importance of China's patent industry and patent translation has become increasingly prominent.The demand for translation of patent documents including Text of Patent Office Action(hereinafter referred to as "OA")has also increased.Based on functional translation theory,especially Hans J.Vermeer's Skopos Theory,this Report focuses on the practical guiding significance of Skopos Theory on OA.The writer tries to formulate principles for OA translation in accordance with the Skopos Theory;in addition,the writer tries to provide some translation strategies for OA translation with the help of the writer's own translation practice.Compared with other practical writings translation,OA has not only the characteristics of general scientific texts,but also the features of legal texts,thus,translators are required to have rich professional background knowledge and solid bilingual translation skills.This report introduces the status of patent application and translation,features of the OA,the background,process of the translation target and performs a series of case analysis with the help of the writer's OA translation internship experience in Ming&Sure Intellectual Property Law Firm(MISP).Two texts of the OA were selected as the research objects.The writer tries to explore how to use the three principles of Skopos in translation practice combined with the features of patent documents under the guidance of Skopos Theory.In addition,combined with specific cases,the writer tries to analyze the practical problem encountered during translation from the three levels of vocabulary,sentence and discourse.In the part of case analysis,according to the three basic principles of Skopos Theory,namely,the skopos rule,the coherence rule and the fidelity rule,the writer believes that in the process of OA translation,translators should fully consider the function and purpose of the translation,and correctly select the translation strategies adopted in OA translation.The writer hopes to summarize and extract the relevant translation skills of the OA on the basis of practice,and promote the specific problems encountered in the practical translation to a summary concept level,which will contribute to guiding the translation practice in the future,and provide practical experience and lessons for translators.
