Though it does not boast a long history in China, translation of science texts plays a vital role in the development of the nation.Nowadays,in the context of China's rapid development, the part that translation plays should not be overlooked in keeping pace with the state-of-the-art science and technology in the world and keeping informed with the latest outcomes of scientific research.Metal-Organic Frameworks for Separations is an influential article which appeared in Chemical Reviews in 2012 and which expounds on the applications of and research into metal-organic frameworks in separations. This dissertation is a translation report on the introductory part, the first and second chapters of this article. It aims to explore the problems encountered by the translator on lexical and syntactic levels, propose some corresponding solutions and provide some insights gained by the translator. This dissertation consists of five chapters. The first chapter introduces the translation task, including its background and significance. The second chapter expounds on the translation process: pre-translation preparation, translation as well as post-translation revision. The third chapter analyzes the lexical and syntactic features of the original and deals with the specific difficulties presented by chemical texts, namely translation of chemical terminology, meaning choice of polysemous words as well as correct understanding of long complex sentences. The fourth chapter, the highlights of this dissertation, provides examples from the translation of tackling the above-mentioned problems from lexical and syntax levels.Specifically speaking, lexically,it covers reasonable diction, transliteration, free translation, combination of pronunciation and meaning, confirming the reference of pronouns;and syntactically, itincludes correct understanding of syntactic structure, converting long complex sentences into short Chinese segments, and arranging clauses in a flexible way.The fifth and last chapter summarizes the translator's understanding of science translation, translation of chemical texts in particular.
